CLEARING'S BLIND SPOT

AFTER EFFECT

Blocking Sight

Blind spot or ‘blind spot’ is a situation where a driver cannot see all the objects around the vehicle being driven. This situation is often taken lightly, even though it can result in death in an instant. NHTSA reports 840,000 blind spot crashes in the United States each year, with 300 of them being fatal.

The risk of accidents due to blind spots is not only concentrated in residential areas or areas with many static objects such as buildings or trees that can protect the driver’s view, but the risk is much higher on wide open highways. The more objects that move around us, the higher the probability of an accident.

Every vehicle definitely has a blind spot. The bigger the size or dimensions of a vehicle, the bigger the blind spot, with a higher risk. However, as with other accident triggers, these blind spots can also be avoided. Among the measures that can be taken to reduce the risk of accidents due to blind spots are:

01.

Car Mirror

Check the rear view mirror and side mirror before moving.

02.

Checking Surround

Identify the movement of vehicles and people where our vehicle is parked BEFORE starting to move; count how many children are there, and make sure the number stays the same when we start moving.

03.

Add Extra Mirror

Add a convex mirror to the side mirror for a wider view, to allow us to see more objects.

04.

Avoid Getting Caught In Tight Gap

Avoid getting stuck in the gap of other vehicles; make sure our vehicle is always in a lane or an open area so we can see everything, while being prepared for any eventuality.

05.

Drive Safe in Traffic Lane

If the traffic is heavy, don’t drive fast, so you have time to react; and never cut from the left side.

The use of technological aids such as gadgets that detect the movement of vehicles and people around our vehicles is also becoming more popular today, because we can now see angles that are not able to be displayed by side mirrors and rear view mirrors. However, we cannot rely on tools and technology alone. Some situations require us to make manual movements, in order to gain a larger point of view. For example, tilt your body to the left when turning right (and vice versa), or tilt your head to the side and back manually to overcome the blind spot. But it should be remembered, these manual steps can only be done if it is safe to do so, and certainly not when our vehicle is moving fast because our eyes are more important to look ahead.

In conclusion, we should always keep in mind that the driving process does not just start when the vehicle starts moving, even before we get into the car (or in some cases, before we buy a car!) all our five senses should always be on standby.
