Use Tobacco Harm Reduction As Guideline

Smoking is harmful to health. This is a fact that everyone knows. However, there are still many smokers out there who still lack the awareness to change. There are still many people who like to smoke conventional cigarettes that use tobacco as the main ingredient. It is admitted that it is not easy to stop the habit that has been ingrained for many years but at least they can start with Tobacco Harm Reduction as an effort in that direction.

Maybe the smoker doesn’t know that the cigarette smoke released while smoking is like spreading an age-shortening agent for people around him because 60-75% of the cigarette smoke will be inhaled by people who don’t smoke. According to the Director of the National Poison Center (PRN) of Universiti Sains Malaysia, Prof. Dr. Dzulkifli Abdul Razak, each cigarette contains 4000 types of chemicals and most of them are poisonous to the smoker and also to those exposed to cigarette smoke. It is even more unfortunate if the people around you are your beloved wife and children. Do smokers want to be life-shortening agents for their own families? Think about it.

The danger to smokers is also high. Through research, only 50% of smokers can live to reach the age of 70. Other than dying young. Among the diseases caused by smoking are throat cancer, mouth cancer, stomach ulcers, heart disease, stroke and many more. All these diseases are dangerous and can lead to death. Through my own experience, mama herself lost 3 family members who were heavy smokers. One due to throat cancer and 2 due to heart disease. All of them died before the age of 70. Of course this is very sad and some children who are still young become orphans because of it.

With the facts above, it is not surprising when the Fatwa Committee of the National Islamic Religious Affairs Council of Malaysia decided that the habit of smoking is haram according to Islamic views through the 37th Muzakarah on 23 March 1995. They presented dalil shari’ as well as medical and scientific evidence showing that smoking is the cause of at least 25 types of diseases that can cause death.

In addition, the habit of smoking also costs a lot of money and affects the family economy. According to research, Malaysians spend RM1.5 billion every year to buy cigarettes. It would be nice if that much money was used for more useful things.

Tobacco Harm Reduction is gaining popularity around the world. It is a method to help heavy smokers in their efforts to quit smoking. The main objective of Tobacco Harm Reduction is to reduce the level of harm of tobacco use by providing less harmful alternatives. Among the methods is to introduce alternative products such as e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products. Although quitting smoking immediately is better, this method can help heavy smokers overcome the drastic effects of quitting smoking. It is proven to be effective based on the following facts:

  1. Approximately 98 million users worldwide have switched to less harmful alternative products such as electronic cigarettes (vapes) and snus to replace conventional cigarettes. (Data from a study by Imperial College London).
  2. 88 percent of vape users who previously smoked cigarettes, have successfully quit smoking. (Data from a study by Malaysian Vape Industry Advocacy (MVIA).
  3. 79 percent who now use vape (used to smoke conventional cigarettes) can reduce the number of cigarettes they smoke since using vape. (Data from a study by Malaysian Vape Industry Advocacy (MVIA).

Not all heavy smokers are able to stop smoking immediately. Only 23% of heavy smokers managed to quit smoking and the remaining 77% were unable to do so. Therefore, with this Tobacco Harm Reduction approach, it is hoped to help this group have awareness and help reduce tobacco consumption as well as encourage them to stop smoking.
